Ang Hoay Loh (紅火爐) may strike a chord among many Penangites.
It is one of the restaurants within Penang selling great Hokkien-style cuisine. The name of this restaurant sounds almost same with Ang Hoay Lor restaurant in Jalan Brick Klin (Jalan Gurdwara); some people said they are different, but according to my mom, both were managed under the same boss...I don't know which one is true...but I would trust the latter...=)
It was my mom's birthday the other day so we decided to have our lunch there. That was my first time there as I was not around in Penang for quite some time...
This restaurant is located along Jalan Perak, which occupied the corner garden space of the State Chinese Association(槟城洲华人工会), just a stone throw away from the France Taipei Bridal House and Chinese Recreation Club which my family spent most of our saturdays there. It's easy to miss it but look out for the red banner on your left.
There are a two signature dishes that most customers will order - the Bak Kee soup and the fried oyster mee. I'm not going to blog about these two as there are many foodblogs out there talking about the same stuff...it's worth to try out for yourself...
But, for my entry this time, I would highlight the other two dishes which were quite good as well...
Mee Suah Tow - an exquisite dish of noodles...I forgot whether its BeeHoon or glassnoodles...with gravy filled with oysters, eggs and vegetables...A spoonful of vinegar adds the final touch! All of us in the family likes vinegar...You can see how good this Mee Suah Tow just by looking at that smiley face...LOL!
And the oyster omelet, well, the oysters, I tell you...they are huge and juicy! The chef was pretty generous as we just couldn't stop picking up those oysters...As you could notice, it's not too sticky like other Oo Chien around Penang...but it was good...=)
Heard from others, this restaurant's food has less oil, which is healthier, but still very tasty. It's not too expensive as well.
In terms of environment, most of the tables were arranged out in the open under the shade and few big trees. Gosh, I remembered how we had to change our tables due to an uncivic-minded guy smoking pipe next to us. Even it's consider open-air, but that's restaurant, dude! RY, promote Green Lung to him!
